President’s Message
February 2021
If you missed our meeting in January, you missed a GREAT program by Larry Marshall about his Stone Sheep hunt. There were about 40 folks present and everyone was enthralled by the pictures and story about his hunt. Personally, I’ve always thought I would like to hunt a Mountain Goat, but his pictures of where he shot his, on the edge of the precipice to nothingness, I’ve been rethinking the whole thing.
Do you remember what you were doing this date one year ago. I was proofreading the program for our Banquet to ensure that all the hunts were properly described. I’ve been doing this for several years and usually don’t find any problems. Sometimes though, there is a last minute scramble to get a correction printed. This year is a bummer with the Governor forcing cancellation of our Banquet. Your Board has, for the last 25 years, been proud to host the best hunting gathering of its type in New Mexico. This year the restrictions would have led to something that nobody would have been proud of or wanted to attend. We felt there was no choice. I hope everyone remembers the Governor’s overreaction next election.
At the January Board meeting we voted to oppose several proposals in the current legislature. The most egregious proposal would surrender NMDG&F properties to private landowners. These properties were paid for with hunting and fishing derived funds and properly belong to the future of all sportsmen. Taking a stand is what we do. I can only pray that the Legislature listens to us.
I have scheduled a Board mtng for the evening of Feb 25th, location to be determined. Our next General Membership mtng is scheduled for Mar 25th, also location to be determined. With der Fureher recently lowering some of her prohibitions, we hope to be able to go back to one of our usual locations. Time will tell. I have asked Brad Thompson to present a program that evening about his Argentine duck and dove hunt.
Have you applied for the hunt draw? The deadline is approaching and I don’t want you to miss it. The NMDG&F website is up and running. For sure, get your hunting/fishing license before April 1st when the Habitat Stamp fee goes up to $10. I pray you and yours are safe and healthy and will be participating in some exciting hunts this coming year.
Sincerely,
RA “Pancho” Maples
President, SNM Chapter SCI
